Chobi rugs are hand-knotted rugs that originated in Afghanistan and are known for their natural dyes, intricate designs, and high-quality wool. The name "chobi" comes from the Farsi and Urdu words chob and chūb, which mean "wood". The rugs are named for the natural dyes used to create them, which are often made from plants, roots, tree bark, nut shells, fruit skins, vegetable skins, and dried flowers. These dyes give the rugs colors that are reminiscent of wood, such as browns, greens, tans, coppers, maroons, and sage greens. The rugs also feature intricate patterns, which are often floral or geometric.
In modern times, many weavers have started to say that when they see a very beautiful rug and get excited, it gives them a "chobi".
