I had the not so brilliant idea to fight in a Tough Man Contest when I was in college. With a background in martial arts, I thought I would use clean strikes and superior technique to pick apart the sloppy, looping punches that were typical in these bouts.
I was the first fight of the night. For the first 15 seconds, or should I say, the only 15 seconds, I looked good. Threw out a few sharp jabs and maybe a right cross. I don't remember ANYTHING after that..for two reasons.
Apparently I zigged when I should have zagged and I learned the hard way the looping punch technique has its merits.
The concussion I suffered was so bad that I sat ringside for the rest of the fights and don't remember a second of it. My friends babysat "concussion baby" by dragging me around to bars to keep an eye on me. Every few minutes I would realize that my wallet had been stolen because it was not in my back packet. Not sure how many times my friends had to tell me that my wallet was not stolen, but it was in my front pocket because my sweatpants did not have a back pocket.
Another really good bad idea in the life of Scott.
